JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Spanish Service of the Latin America Division of the Voice of America (VOA) in Washington, DC with responsibility for writing, producing, adapting, and editing content for the Service's web and mobile phone-based news and information outlets.

INTRODUCTION TO AGENCY

The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency, is an exciting, multicultural organization that encompasses all U.S. civilian international broadcasting. The BBG is comprised of the Voice of America, which delivers high qualify, multimedia programming in 45 language to audiences worldwide; the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Marti); the International Broadcasting Bureau, which provides transmission, administrative, and other support service; and three grantee organization - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa), and Radio Free Asia. Our staff of dedicated professionals serves as an example of a free and independent media, reaching a worldwide audience with news, information, and relevant discussions.

Duties

Researches, selects, and prepares original material to provide additional background and highlight key elements of Spanish web news reports: To increase the comprehensiveness of VOA Spanish Internet news, reviews, selects, and prepares background information for reports published on the world wide web. Such information may include the VOA reports, graphics, bulleted highlights of stories, and Internet links to related web sites. As needed, requests and coordinates the preparation of graphic enhancements.

Prepares multimedia news reports for the Spanish news website. As assigned, covers news events, conducts and edits audio and/or video interviews, writes news copy, and assembles multimedia reports for the news site. Shares these reports with appropriate sections for use in other VOA media formats.

Selects and edits multimedia enhancements to add news value to VOA Spanish web news reports: Reviews, selects, obtains, and edits still photos - and audio and video clips - to accompany news texts published on the multimedia news site. These may come from in-house or off-line sources to which VOA subscribes. As needed, request and coordinates the preparation and encoding of such multimedia enhancements. Ensures that copyright restrictions are respected.

Under the guidance of the Supervisor, selects, edits and formats materials for uploading onto web page along with visually appealing graphics. Record and edit video and audio, as well as photo galleries.

Ability to conduct interviews over the phone. Monitors websites and provides statistical reports. Frequently update and refresh the web site.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants must meet the following basic requirements:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: The candidate must be experienced in writing, producing, adapting, and editing content in Spanish for the Service's web and mobile phone-based news and information outlets. Such experience must have clearly demonstrated the ability to use complete multimedia software systems as well as Internet development to produce state-of-the-art website content; professional understanding of HTML, Content Management publishing tools and photo, video and audio editing. In addition to knowledge of journalism in general, web-based journalism in particular is required.

SCREEN OUT FACTOR: Fluency in the Spanish language sufficient to enable the incumbent to research, select, write, prepare and publish original multimedia news reports for the Spanish news website. Knowledge of photo, video and audio editing.

1. Knowledge of journalism in general and web-based journalism in particular with specific understanding of web story telling and developments such as social networking, blogging, community based web sites as well as knowledge of copyright law and privacy protection.

2. Demonstrated skill in the use of complex multimedia software systems related to digital audio, video, and graphic editing as well as Internet development to produce state-of-the-art web site content. This includes news web site technologies, an understanding of HTML, Content Management publishing tools, photo, video and audio editing..

3. Knowledge of targeted area, it's history, economics, culture and socio-political development to select materials, tone and style that will be most appealing to the audience.
